Could One Blood Test Detect 50+ Types of Cancer?
At KC Primary Care, we’re always looking for innovative ways to support your long-term health—and that includes staying ahead of disease before it ever shows symptoms. One tool we’re excited to offer is the Galleri® test—a simple blood test that screens for more than 50 types of cancer in one draw.
This test doesn’t replace your regular cancer screenings (like mammograms or colonoscopies), but it can complement them by potentially catching hard-to-detect cancers earlier, when they’re most treatable.
How It Works
The Galleri test looks for tiny fragments of DNA that cancer cells release into the bloodstream. These fragments, called cell-free DNA, can sometimes be detected before symptoms even begin.
If a cancer signal is found, the test can also help your doctor determine where in the body the cancer might be originating—making the next steps in diagnosis faster and more targeted.
Benefits of the Galleri Test
Here’s why many patients over 50 are choosing to add this to their annual health plan:
Detects 50+ Types of Cancer
Galleri can screen for cancers that often go undetected—like pancreatic, ovarian, or esophageal cancers—which currently have no recommended routine screening tests.
Earlier Detection = Better Outcomes
Early detection means more treatment options, less aggressive interventions, and a higher likelihood of survival. This test adds another layer to your prevention strategy.
Helps Guide Further Testing
If a positive signal is found, Galleri includes information about the likely tissue of origin. That can help your doctor decide what scans or follow-ups to order next, rather than starting blind.
Important Things to Know
The Galleri test is a powerful screening tool—but it’s not right for everyone. Here’s what to keep in mind:
It’s a Complement, Not a Replacement
Galleri should be used alongside, not instead of, your standard cancer screenings. You’ll still need things like mammograms, Pap tests, and colonoscopies.
False Positives and Negatives Can Happen
Like all screening tools, the Galleri test isn’t perfect. A positive result doesn’t confirm cancer—it just signals the need for more testing. Likewise, a negative result doesn’t guarantee that cancer isn’t present.
Best for People Over 50
This test is designed for adults with an elevated risk of cancer, especially those aged 50 or older. It is not recommended for pregnant individuals, those under 22, or anyone currently undergoing active cancer treatment.
Is the Galleri Test Right for You?
If you’re in your 50s (or older) and want to be proactive about your health, the Galleri test might be a smart addition to your annual screening plan.
We’re happy to discuss whether it’s appropriate for your individual risk factors and help you decide what makes sense for your goals.
